[nsfw][spoilers] Why I fell in love with Seinfeld

Published 5 Nov '24

It started at my old job, where we had a Slack channel just for Seinfeld. My coworker Claudia would drop references that flew right over my head. After months of fake laughing, FOMO kicked in and I finally gave it a shot. Best. Decision. Ever!

Real and Spectacular

As a lefty, I instantly connected with Jerry's bit about how "left" is always associated with something negative - like "two left feet" or "left-handed compliment." Finally, someone gets it!

The show's observational comedy is just chef's kiss. The show is too real, too relatable and perfectly captures those tiny moments we all experience but never talk about. Here's one of my faves:

George thinking of a comeback
We've all had that perfect comeback... hours after the argument is over when we can't help but feel frustrated we didn't think of it sooner

Genius Callbacks

The best thing about Seinfeld isn't just the one-off jokes - it's how they bring back running gags at the perfect moment. Sometimes they'll reference something from 10 episodes ago and you're like "Oh yeah, THAT happened!"

Like in season 7, when George is all dramatic about being single in the first episode. Then BAM! At the end of the season, Jerry ends up in the same boat. It's these kind of connections that make you feel rewarded for watching every episode.

One of my all time fave callbacks across seasons:

Female patient gets sponge bath
During 'The Contest' episode, George sees a female nurse giving a sponge bath to a female patient - testing his self-control
Male patient gets sponge bath
A season later, when his sexuality is in question, he witnesses a male nurse giving a sponge bath to a male patient

Unparallel Parallels

General Metaphors

Seinfeld is amazing at finding similarities in different situations. Like when Jerry "breaks up" with a friend the same way you'd end a romantic relationship. Or when two neighbors act like a married couple complaining they never see each other anymore.

George consoling Susan about women
George, the guy who can't keep a woman, giving relationship advice to a lesbian about women

Pop Culture References

The show brilliantly wove the popular events into its plots like the JFK assassination and the OJ Simpson car chase.

Judge asking Sue Ellen to try the bra
A brilliant parody of the OJ Simpson trial - Sue Ellen (nicknamed 'The Braless Wonder') who is on a trial is asked to try on a bra in court - Art imitating life!

Euphemisms

This abortion debate was so subtle that I didn't even realize I read it on reddit.

Pizza in the oven metaphor
"It is not pizza until till it comes out of the oven"
"It's a pizza the moment you put your fists in the dough!

The show found clever ways to discuss taboo topics that would never get past the censors

The contest episode
The infamous 'Contest' episode where they compete to be 'Master of their Domain'
Probably the most creative way to discuss... the urge to gratifying oneself!

The way it captures life's little moments, the clever callbacks, and the brilliant parallels - it's all pure genius! I went from being completely clueless about Seinfeld to someone who can't stop quoting it in daily conversations. And you know what? I wouldn't have it any other way! 🏆
