How to (not???) summit Mt. Fuji ๐ป
I always pictured mountain climbing as something for extreme hikers, you know, the type who own dozens of specialized hiking shoes and can start fires with two sticks. But then I climbed Mount Fuji and it wasn't nearly as intimidating as I'd imagined! While it's no walk in the park, with a bit of planning and a lot of grit, reaching the summit is totally doable.
In this blog, I'll break down my journey and hopefully show you that you can conquer Fuji too!
Starting Line: The 5th Station
Hop on a bus to the 5th station, which sits at 2,300 meters. Take an hour here to let your body acclimatize to the altitude (and question your life choices). While you're waiting you can:
- fuel up at the cafeteria
- pick up a wooden stick - you can get it stamped along the way (for a fee)
- perhaps snag a lucky charm for your loved ones! ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ ๐ถ
To the Mountain Hut
Take it slow and steady - this isn't a race! Enjoy the changing scenery and use the stations to catch your breath and refuel.
At the Hut
You'll be served dinner and breakfast, so make sure to arrive on time for check-in! Stock up on snacks and water to keep you fueled for the hike ahead.

To the Summit
Around midnight, you'll join the trail of headlamps heading for the peak. It's tough, but the potential for a breathtaking sunrise makes it all worthwhile! ๐ฆ
At the Summit
Congrats, you've reached the top of Japan! Take in the views, snap some pics, and if you're feeling adventurous, take a 2-hour stroll around the crater.

The Long Way Down
Brace yourself - many climbers find the descent more challenging than going up. Take it slow, watch your footing and soak in those fantastic views.
It's about 3 hours back to the 5th station. Make sure you catch that last 6.30pm bus unless you want an expensive taxi ride back! Once you're back, give yourself a pat on the back - you've just climbed Mount Fuji!
Bonus tip: Grab some wooden postcards from Itoya store in Ginza (if in Tokyo before hike) to mail them from Fuji's summit post office! Even if you aren't planning to hike, they make great gifts for friends and family back home. ๐
And there you have it, folks! This iconic mountain offers more than just a hike - it's a journey that will stay with you long after you've descended. Remember, it's all about the experience, not just reaching the top.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions! Happy climbing! ๐ป
